A private members’ bill to end the import and sale of real fur in Britain has been introduced to Parliament by Ruth Jones, Labour MP for Newport West and Islwyn, and LAWS patron.

The bill would extend current trade bans on cat, dogs and seal fur to other species, including mink, foxes, raccoon dogs, chinchillas, and other species.

The crucial second reading of the bill will take place on Friday 13 June 2025.

The UK because the first country in the world to ban fur farming in 2000, after a campaign led by Respect for Animals. This legislation started as a Private Member’s Bill like this one, promoted at the time by Maria Eagle MP.

Mark Glover, Labour Animal Welfare Society Chair and anti-fur campaigner, has said:

By banning the import of cruel fur products, Britain will no longer contribute to the pain and torment inflicted on animals by the fur trade. Thank you to Ruth Jones MP for taking on this issue. We will be using our experience of successful fur legislation to do everything to ensure this bill succeeds. Fur is cruel and the British people want it banned.

LAWS has produced a single A4 page briefing on the key reasons for a full fur ban, which you can download for free below.

Those reasons include:

  • Ending extreme forms of animal cruelty
  • Closing legal loopholes
  • Honouring public morality
  • Supporting public health
